When I first started copywriting, it was rare for me to see another writer on the networking circuit.
That surprised me until I realised that writers were regarded as either….
a) alien beings
b) unnecessary because everyone can write can’t they
c) hidden away from other businesses because they were an important part of the engine that drives a business
Recently I’ve met more writers and I’m always glad to do so. I never see other writers as competition for me because I think there’s work in plenty for all of us. And I hope it means that more writers means that businesses are paying us a fair measure of respect and attention.
Last week I was asked to quote for a job for a construction company. Now that’s not my area of expertise and though I’d have given it my best shot, an expert in the industry probably would have done it faster and with more background knowledge. So like businesses, writers have their own specialisms and strengths.
Mine is direct response copywriting. My training was focused on getting businesses a response from their websites, e-mail marketing, sales brochures and sales letters.
