From time to time people ask me the easiest way to write good sales letters, and websites etc.
I’m always tempted to tell them the old chestnut about the guy who stops someone and asks how to get to Carnegie Hall…
‘Practise, practise, practise’, comes back the reply.
And that’s the truth of it. As with any other skill, if you want to be a first class writer getting results you have to practise.
Are there any shortcuts to learn copywriting? Yes – get yourself a good mentor who can put across the fundamentals of clear results driven writing. Again as in other subjects not every practitioner can teach.
What about sales letter templates – how much use are they?
Well if you have absolutely no idea where to start they can be a guide. The problem I find with them is that they don’t help you with one of the fundamental skills you need.
That is understanding the customer. No matter what system you learn with, that’s at the heart of everything for a writer. And using templates can give you a false sense of security that if you just copy them you’ll get the best result.
I’ve also been asked to teach writing and as a qualified teacher I considered it. But at the time it wasn’t appropriate for me and I’ve compromised to produce a guide instead.
Not a book of sales templates but an ABC guide to copywriting. Takes you through the basics of setting about writing with the process I use to write every project.
It’s not a fancy guide but a basic black and white manual you can use, get dog eared and have by the computer.
For just £37 it will give you a practical start.
