Since the workshop in Leicester last week about social media, I’ve been trying to get up to speed with more of it.
I don’t know if you’re like me, only wanting to put my toe in the water… in case… but of what I’m not sure. My usual way of learning is to read a lot about something and then try and focus in on what seems to be the most important points.
That’s how I’m trying to do it with the social media.
As far as writing for the new style of community is concerned, it seems to be what I was taught several years ago. That the more you can connect with your reader, the better. That means that you have to be a real person writing about things that are real to you and the reader.
I was asked this week if I was interested in working with a professional service company. I said yes of course I’d be interested in talking to them to see if we’re a good fit. And then I had a quick look at their website.
In spite of the fact they were in a sector where people definitely choose suppliers on the basis of personality and relationship building, there was very little personality showing through. It underlines what one of my web designer friends was saying to me recently.
She was trying to get her clients, particularly those with coaching or mentoring businesses, to stop using the third person and use the first in their writing. I instead of their name. Since it’s the person they’re buying she feels very strongly, well forcefully to be honest that talking about yourself as if you’re someone else just give off the wrong feeling.
If you have that kind of business, what do you think?
