I had a moment of pure pleasure this week when I saw
Humphrey in the garden. It was one of those lovely soft sunny mornings that autumn brings us. The colours were vibrant and the whole garden seemed alive with the last frantic insect and bird work before the cold really sets in.
And there was Humphrey stalking leaves down the path. They were floating down from a sycamore tree at the back of our house and hitting him on his head.
At one point he was almost covered with leaves. I’ve never seen cats slushing their feet through piles of leaves but it looked like the cat equivalent of that.
Since we don’t know how old he was when he turned up, we don’t really know how old he is now. But whatever his real age, he behaved like the maddest kitten racing about.
Such a joy.
