In my last post I talked about using music to create an effective mindset.
But there is another link to music – well two really.
Last night I went to a concert with the Kirk Lightsey Trio. If any of you are into jazz he’s definitely to be investigated. Aged 70 and swinging like a twenty year old!
Two things struck me to learn from the experience.

One – the audience was aged between teens and eighty year olds. Common link – the music. So if we’re promoting any service or product that’s what we have to find. The common link that unites the target audience.
Not their age, or their political persuasion, or their income.
Two – there is a quality to good writing that is difficult to define and even more difficult to achieve.
It’s rhythm. When the writing flows you don’t even notice it. When it doesn’t it can feel uncomfortable and jerky.
Professional writers work hard to achieve it. As one leading copywriter, Ted Nicholas says, ‘If my text reads easy, it’s been written with hard work.’
Stay tuneful and rhythmic.
Regards,
Eileen

From time to time people ask me the easiest way to write good sales letters, and websites etc.
Im always tempted to tell them the old chestnut about the guy who stops someone and asks how to get to Carnegie Hall…
Practise, practise, practise, comes back the reply.
And thats the truth of it. As with any other skill, if you want to be a first class writer getting results you have to practise.
Are there any shortcuts to learn copywriting? Yes " get yourself a good mentor who can put across the fundamentals of clear results driven writing. Again as in other subjects not every practitioner can teach.
What about sales letter templates " how much use are they?
Well if you have absolutely no idea where to start they can be a guide. The problem I find with them is that they dont help you with one of the fundamental skills you need.
That is understanding the customer. No matter what system you learn with, thats at the heart of everything for a writer. And using templates can give you a false sense of security that if you just copy them youll get the best result.
Ive also been asked to teach writing and as a qualified teacher I considered it. But at the time it wasnt appropriate for me and Ive compromised to produce a guide instead.
Not a book of sales templates but an ABC guide to copywriting. Takes you through the basics of setting about writing with the process I use to write every project.
Its not a fancy guide but a basic black and white manual you can use, get dog eared and have by the computer.
For just £37 it will give you a practical start.
Send me an email if youre interested to Eileen at words-for-you.co.uk and Ill tell you more…

Every time I think I know everything about something a warning voice goes off in my head…

Ive been writing for clients for five years and studying for longer than that. So in relation to a lot of people I could I guess call myself a copywriting expert. But even experts whove been in the copywriting business for longer than me sometimes hesitate at using the word expert.
Because it implies that they dont need to learn anything else. And one thing that unites all the people I study is that they never stop learning.
They never stop trying to understand what makes buyers tick. Just when they think they have it sussed, a piece they wrote bombs and they have to figure out why.
And if Ive learned one thing in my copywriting business its this. Guessing isnt good enough. If youre writing for a website or sending out a sales letter and you dont have any means to test it then youre wasting your money.
How do you know whether someone will react better to a price written in words than a price written in numbers if you dont test it? Or prefer the words read on to click here.
Yet every day businesses waste money on websites that dont test, adverts that have nothing to do with what customers want and sales letters that insult the readers intelligence.
Dont guess. Test. Youll probably be amazed or shocked. But either way its better to know isnt it?
