That’s the question many people ask me when I talk to them about writing a book. How do I find a publisher?
This post could end up a long one because it’s a big subject. And yet….
it can be reduced down to a very simple proposition.
Finding a publisher is simply being able to excite someone enough about your idea for a book that they see the possibilities of it doing something for them.
Which is why when I was writing the How To Write a Book Workshop (to be held 28/29 June, Nottingham)I concentrated my effort on helping you establish what you want to write, why you want to write it and most important of all, who is your target audience.
It’s no use expecting a publisher, or an agent if you approach one to do the work for you. Sorry if that’s a blow but we live in a commercial world and if you want someone to help you then you have to give them the best possible chance of doing that.
Which means being very clear about your subject and your reader.
For example: if you were looking for a book about coaching which is a huge subject now, you would have some idea about the type of coach you wanted. So if you were looking for coaching to help you with family relationships then a book about business coaching might not be the ideal match for you.
That’s why the clearer you are about the topic and target for your book, the easier it will be to find a publisher who is the ideal match for you. You won’t waste time approaching publishers who have no interest in the topic and you’ll be more specific about how your book will fit into a publisher’s range and reach part of their audience they might be missing out on at the moment.
In the workshop we spend time on all that so at the end of the first day you can go away with a clear idea for your book proposal and an action plan to find the best publisher for you.
