Before my book launch this week I had one of my rare poor sleeping nights. Well you can understand it can’t you since I was undergoing
a mixture of terror and excitement. But it ended up with me making tea at 4.30 in the am. Not a time I usually know about.
Of course Humphrey loved it because he blagged an extra feed. Then he demanded to go out. Perhaps he thought it was a safe time to be out. Without the intruder in the garden.
What amazed me was that the birds were already alert. Major bird song time. I was so surprised I stood at the back door for a few minutes listening. Wonderful. The peace and quiet, apart from Humphrey’s miaows, and then the bird song.
He’s been more active this week, despite the cold so spring must be coming. More evidence with all the shoots in the garden. Maybe not in the economy but let’s stay positive. I always feel that if it’s daylight things are easier to deal with than in those dead long dark days of winter.

We had another minor scare with Humphrey last week. I’ve talked before about how much he likes his food and missing meals isn’t usually an option with him. Well on Tuesday morning he didn’t appear having spent the night out on the tiles.
Still hadn’t appeared by lunchtime and you can’t help worrying… a little.
Then we were on the landing looking out over the grassy area that’s at the front of the sheltered housing next to us. One guy there has his own garden with borders and trellis and pots. It looks a picture and we get the benefit of it. Since he arrived he’s put up two garden sheds and a greenhouse where he grows most of his plants from seed.
While we were watching, we caught sight of some danger signs. White feathers. Or we thought so. To check it out properly I went down to the garden and peered over the fence. Definitely white feathers.
Well it’s happened before that Humphrey sometimes sleeps for a long time after a kill. Just like the big cats. So we stopped worrying.
Then after I’d been out I was putting away my bag in the bedroom and looked out again to see the old gentleman walking back to his bungalow having been by one of his sheds, or the greenhouse I wasn’t sure.
Two minutes later, one black and white cat arrives, very warm, very dry and hungry. But not bite your hand off hungry.
What a cat.

Because it was such a wet night yesterday, Humphrey decided to put chasing small furry things on hold and grace us with his presence. He sat curled up on my lap while I watched Dr Who.
He’s not as cuddly as the cat I used to have, called Sam, who would happily sit draped around my shoulders if I’d let him. But in his own way Humphrey’s a loving cat. I suppose he now comes into the category of senior cats because he must be about 9 or 10. Not quite sure since he was a stray.
Given that Sam was 19 when we had him put to sleep, we could have Humphrey for another 10 years. I don’t know how you’ve felt as an animal owner but I was in pieces when Sam died. I’d had him since he was 4 months old and he’d moved house with me 4 times, been parked with friends when I had nowhere for him to be with me and generally he was the most tolerant cat.
When we moved here, I put him in his basket in the old house and he curled up and went to sleep and didn’t wake up till I was ready to let him out after the removers had departed. The other cat Portia wailed all day, at the top of her voice distracting all of us!
There’ll never be another cat for me like Sam but I do love Humphrey for his funny ways and his independent spirit. After Sam died I made a scrapbook full of photos and quotes. One of my favourite ones is this:
“Cats could have ruled the universe but couldn’t be bothered.” Paul Gray.
I think they do very well as it is without the bothering.
